information about this article
Everyone’s hair journey is different and unique. Some have beautiful curls and others have bleach blonde wavy hair. But, no matter what type of hair need or type you have nothing has ever been more confusing as the topic of Hair Porosity.
But before we get into all that lets first discuss a bit on how hair retains and absorbs moisture. When you are taking about a single strand of hair—each one has multiple layers and the outer most layer is the cuticle layer. If those cuticles on the outer level are close together that means its harder for water to get to the shaft and make your hair moisturized.
What is Hair Porosity?
Porosity typically relates to how dense or porous something is and when used to describe hair often relates to the ability of your hair to retain moisture. For most of us porosity is genetic, but it can also be impacted by things we do every day—like processing or chemically treating our hair. Knowing your hair's porosity can help you choose the right products to keep your hair well-moisturized, supple, strong and shiny.
You can determine whether your hair has high porosity or low porosity by simply placing a few strands in a bowl of water. If the strands float to the to the bottom that means you have high hair porosity. If your hair still floats at the top after four minutes, it means you have low hair porosity. Read on to see whether you have high hair porosity or low hair porosity.

What is High Hair Porosity?
High Hair Porosity means your hair absorbs too much moisture and typically looks dull or dry. This hair tends to be frizzy, dry, and tangles easily. You can treat high porosity hair with either our Love Beauty and Planet Argan Oil and Lavender Leave in Conditioner or our Love Beauty and Planet Argan Oil and Lavender Conditioner. Coconut Oil for hair is also great for those of us with high porosity hair. And, all of Love Beauty and Planet’s signature shampoos are infused with natural Coconut Oil.
What is Low Hair Porosity?
Low porosity hair is typically very shiny and usually darker tones. Low porosity hair does not do well with moisture or chemicals. Low porosity hair can also feel stiff and brittle. You should check out our Love Beauty and Planet Indian Lilac and Clove Leaf Shine Conditioner if you have low porosity hair.
Low porosity hair requires moisturizers rich in emollients such as our Love Beauty and Planet Shea Butter Conditioner. It also benefits from humectant products, which attract and hold moisture to your hair. Choose lighter, liquid-based products such as hair milks that won't sit on your hair and leave it oily or greasy.

What if You Have Medium Hair Porosity?
If you have medium porosity hair than you are in luck. This means your hair is healthy and happy. It typically means your hair absorbs and retains the perfect amount of moisture and has lots of volume.
